Unlearning Adulthood: The Truth About Time Outs

If time outs were redesigned as opportunities to come back to ourselves, to really think about our actions holistically—not as “good” or “bad”, “right”, or “wrong,” but whether our actions really align with who we are as humans, then maybe they’d stick around past adolescence.  If the timeout matured with us into adulthood, we may not fear moments in elevators, being first to the party, last on the yoga mat, alone on train, because time, out, alone would no longer be a symbol of wrongdoing.  A timeout would be sacred.

Signs the Mind Body Connection is Missing

Surprisingly, the mind and body disconnect every day.  We lose awareness, grow tired, and lose our sense of self the further and further mind and body separate.

Surprisingly, the mind and body become disconnected every day.  We lose awareness, grow tired, and lose our sense of self the further and further mind and body separate.  I go through on a monthly basis, everything time I work on a new play.  Suddenly, my life isn't my own.  Self-care goes by the wayside as my number one focus is the actors, their clothes, and the wardrobe crew.  My body grows tired, but my mind screams "soldier on!"  This leads to sleeplessness, poor eating, and a sadness I just can't quell.

I Spent a Week in Silence, Here's What Happened

Silence is a funny thing.  It has the power to restore the body and the mind, giving our brains a much needed break from the noisy world, but were so resistant to seek it out.  So, for a whole week, I turned off the car radio, shut off the music in my life, and got comfortable with silence.

The think about silence, is that in this modern age, we're not so comfortable with it.  No one is used to silence.  The streets are noisy.  We always have headphones in.  Our cars blast music, audiobooks, and podcasts.  Even our yoga classes often come with a pan flute soundtrack.  So, when silence confronts us on a country night star gazing, or the day the radio gives out, we gravitate towards fear.  Fear of what sounds will come next, and fear of what might materialize in ours heads through the silence.  But, what if, we just carved out a little time every day to relish the quiet?

All Ears: Podcast That Create Space

On my weekly drives to the IV clinic, binging podcasts keeps my mind engaged, my energy going, and my body calm.  Podcasts keep my temper tantrums at bay while sitting on the Richmond Bridge at rush hour, or nodding off after a long day.

If you're looking for the perfect mind/body podcasts, here's the list I can't live without.
